| McDowell Technical Community College was founded in 1964 as a satellite center for Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute. In 1967, the center became an independent unit of the Department of Community Colleges, and in 1970 the campus was moved to its present site at the Intersection of NC 226 South and I-40 (Exit 86) in 1970. McDowell Tech proudly serves over 1200 students per year in curriculum classes and over 5800 more in extension programs (continuing education, industry training, etc.).
Most curriculum classes are held on the main campus at 54 College Drive, although the college also operates facilities at the JobLink Career Center (Main Street, Marion), Baxter's Healthcare (North Cove, NC) and at Foothill's ADAP (Lukin Street, Marion). Other individualized programs, such as industry training, Adult Basic Skills classes and Mom's and More classes, operate throughout the county on a daily basis.
The main campus is easily accessible from most major highways: I-40, NC 221 and 226. A campus map is available at www.mcdowelltech.cc.nc.us/campusmap.html
MTCC offers a number of programs in vocational and technical curriculums which prepare students for immediate employment in the workforce. Other programs, such as College Transfer, prepare students for additional undergraduate work at 4-year colleges throughout the nation. For those who wish to obtain a bachelors degree but need or choose to stay in McDowell County, MTCC has established cooperative agreements with Appalachian State University, Gardner Webb University, Montreat College, and Western Carolina University, allowing these schools to offer selected bachelors level programs on the McDowell Tech campus.
MTCC recognizes the diversity of backgrounds and needs among our students, and our faculty and staff are committed to meeting those needs. Our motto is, Learning For Life, and we don't just say, we make it happen! |
| McDowell Tech offers a number of traditional and non-traditional programs at the two-year college level. However, we are recognized for particularly strong programs in Advertising and Graphic Design, Cosmetology, and Photography.
In the fall of 2000, MTCC began a new program in Esthetics Technology, offering specialized training in skin care and related services to individuals interested in working in salons or spas. Estheticians offer facials, body wraps, reflexology, waxing and many other specialized treatments to meet not only the medical and therapeutic needs of their clients, but also to meet their needs for relaxation and pampering. Our first year graduates have had lots of success: two are working at the Spa at Grove Park Inn (Asheville, NC) and one is working in a spa in Charleston, SC.
During the fall of 2001, the College began offering classes in Health Information Technology to students interested in working for physician's offices, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and other related facilities. Health Information Technologists typically work in the business area coordinating such activities as insurance billing, medical coding, and records management. The demand for graduates with these skills appears to be high and salaries are above average.
During the spring of 2002, the College will begin offering Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology for students interested in the design, construction and repair of commercial and residential air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems. |
