| The Guilford College campus is a beautiful
340 acre campus situated in the western
residential area of Greensboro, North
Carolina. The college is bordered by woods
on one end and easy access to stores on the
other. The downtown area of Greensboro is a
short five minute drive and includes not only
many businesses and entertainment
possibilities, but five other colleges and
universities with which Guilford College has a
learning consortium allowing students to take
classes at these other campuses. These
colleges include North Carolina A&T State
University, Greensboro College, University of
North Carolina at Greensboro, Elon College,
Bennett College, Guilford Technical
Community College, and High Point
University.
Guilford College, which was founded by The
Society of Friends (Quakers), remains strong
to the philosophy of the Quakers in the student
involvement and trust in all aspects of
decision making, closeness of relationships
between students and professors: including
the use of first names from students to
professors to the president of the college, and
the open atmosphere to all types of diversity
which tries to foster understanding and
respect not just tolerance. The atmosphere of
learning and living prepares individuals to
enter the broader world with a greater
understanding not just of their chosen field,
but for the many other aspects of life, including
community commitment and involvement,
which requires not only a base of knowledge
but also a willingness to listen as well as
make their voice heard in the appropriate
situations.

| Guilford College is a liberal arts college,
based around the ideals of a well rounded
education. There are 38 majors offered
ranging from Business Management to
Computer Information Systems to Geology to
Pre-med. There are also well over 54
minors offered many of which
integrate multiple departments of study. A
good example would be the concentration
offered in Non-Profit Management which
integrates an offering of classes from the
following academic departments: Accounting,
Management, Justice and Policy Studies,
Psychology, Sociology/Anthropology, Political
Science Department, and Economics.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of
Guilford's classes is not only the fact that
students refer to their professors by first
names (a sign of respect and equality in the
Quaker tradition), but also the intense
discussion and analysis of what is being
learned, not memorization but analyzation and
understanding of the material being learned.
In respect to this many classes are held in a
circle so that the discussion can easily evolve
and flow from one individuals thoughts to the
next without the anonymity of the individual that
is speaking. Learning at Guilford is a shared
process of both students and faculty. |
