It is a great pleasure to welcome your application to Winston Salem State University. WSSU is a multi-hub, comprehensive institution offering a variety of graduate programs. This university presents distinctive opportunities and exceptional academic programs for prospective, entering and returning graduate students. Our graduate programs work collaboratively with the Faculty Senate Graduate Council and other academic departments to develop, maintain, and administer policies and procedures for all graduate programs. The university currently offers career-oriented graduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education and Human Performance, and the School of Health Sciences.   We have certificate programs, master's level programs and we are now have two doctoral programs.  Our graduate and professional programs are as follows:

Your failure to provide complete, accurate, and truthful information on this application will be grounds to deny or withdraw your admission, or dismiss you after enrollment. When you are finished, click the 'SUBMIT' button on the left column of any application screen. You may pay the nonrefundable application fee of $50 directly online using a debit/credit card. Should you wish to pay the fee with a check or money order, please print and return the application agreement statement that appears after you submit the application, and return the printed agreement along with the nonrefundable fee of $50 to:

For admission consideration to a graduate degree program, the applicant must submit the following:

General Application Requirements for all applicants unless otherwise noted by the graduate program:

  • Submit All Supplemental Application documents in one package.
  • A completed application agreement statement
  • A $50 nonrefundable application processing fee
  • One (1) set of official transcripts in sealed envelopes from each college and university previously attended. International Applicants please provide an evaluation of college coursework completed outside of the United States (suggested companies listed in next section).
  • Three (3) letters of recommendations from former professors, current employers, or persons well acquainted with the applicant's academic potential. Please refer to the admissions requirements for the chosen degree program regarding additional recommendation requirements.
  • GRE, MAT or GMAT scores. (See program test requirements) 
  • Any other specific documents required from the chosen degree program

Additional Requirements for International Applicants:
Spring Deadline: September 15th
Fall Deadline: April 15th
(If the graduate program deadline is earlier than the above stated deadline, international students must submit their documents by the graduate program deadline.)

  • International applicants whose native language is not English and those who earned their undergraduate degrees from institutions outside of the United States, which do not use English as the medium of instruction, must submit the following additional documents:
    • Results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum score required for admission is 550 (written) or 213 (computer) OR International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score required for admission is 6.5. Only official test scores received directly from the testing service will be considered valid.
  • Financial Certification - Bank Statement (Graduate Students $28,700 subject to change without prior notification)
  • Sponsors Affidavit
  • Transcripts: One Official transcript or documents with official seals as evidence of college work completed are required from schools attended inside the United Sates. Such documents must indicate that the minimum of a four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent has been awarded by an accredited college or university.
  • *PLEASE NOTE: If transcripts are obtained from a university outside of the United States, the transcripts must be evaluated by an International Education Evaluation Service. While not excluding others, we have found evaluations by the following agents acceptable:

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Spring-November 15th, Summer/Fall-April 15th
International Applicant deadline is September 15th for Spring, April 15th for Fall

  • All General Application Requirements as previously listed
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
  • 2 concentrations in the MAT program: Middle Grades Education OR Special Education
  • Supplemental MAT program application required for application
  • Current GRE or MAT scores are required
  • A minimum grade-point-average of 2.50
  • Statement of purpose (1 page)
  • Three references are required from colleagues who can validate your professional experience.
  • Two official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended.

Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language in Applied Linguistics (MA/TESOL) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Spring-November15th, Fall-July 15th

  • All General Application Requirements as previously listed
  • Individuals who hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree and a current teaching license in any area may enroll in the program to become NC certified ESL K-12 teachers.  Individuals who do not wish to become certified can also enroll in the program.
  • Candidates must show evidence of having studied a foreign language at the college level.  The ESL Program Coordinator will evaluate all previous transcripts.
  • Non-native speakers of English must submit official score reports for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score for admission is 550 for TOEFL (paper-based), 213 for TOEFL (computer-based), or 6.5 for IELTS.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Spring-November 15th, Fall-June 15th

Master of Education in Elementary Education (M.Ed.) Application Requirements:
Not accepting applications for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Master of Education in Elementary Education Distance Learning (M.Ed.-DL) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Fall-July 15th, Spring-November15th

  • All General Application Requirements as previously listed
  • A North Carolina "A" License in Elementary Education, the equivalent from another state, or a temporary lateral entry license for employment in an elementary school setting
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience in an elementary classroom
  • An undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores - General Test or the Miller Analogies Test scores
  • A satisfactory written statement of purpose
  • Recommendations must be from 3 professional educators

Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Fall-June 15th, Spring-November15th

The following items are required for application to the MHA program:

  • Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores - General Test
  • Admissions essay - "Why I want an MHA and why I want to obtain it from WSSU." Please also indicate in your essay the reasons why you believe that you will be successful in the MHA program
  • Current Resume highlighting professional work experience
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75

Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (MCST) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Spring-October 15th, Fall-June 15th

  • A written personal statement (essay describing professional goals, experience, and research interests)
  • Resume reflecting work experience
  • Documentation of prior learning which satisfies program pre-requisite knowledge (in lieu of pre-requisite courses - for applicants who do not hold the BS in computer science)

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Application Requirements:
Deadline: February 15, 2014

  • Complete WSSU MSN Program Admissions Application
  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally recognized accredited college or university
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or greater
  • Official report of GRE or MAT Score
  • Official transcripts from all previous academic work
  • Undergraduate courses in statistics, research, and health assessment with a grade of "C" or higher. The health assessment course must have been completed at the baccalaureate level within the last 5 years.
  • One year clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse (Waive for a GPA of 3.4 and combined GRE 1000 (New scale a minimum of Verbal-153 and Quantative-144)
  • Three Letters of Reference. The letter should reflect the applicant's intellectual ability, academic achievement, and professional commitment.
  • Professional resume
  • Documentation of an active and unencumbered North Carolina or Compact State registered nurse license
  • Submit an Admission essay of 800-1000 words describing the reason for choosing the MSN program at WSSU, short and long term goals, and your understanding of the advanced nursing role (ANE or FNP).
Post Master's Certificate Admission Requirements
  • Complete WSSU Graduate Program Application
  • Master's degree in Nursing from a program accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body
  • A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
  • Three Letters of Reference. The letter should reflect the applicant's intellectual ability, academic achievement, and professional commitment.
  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae
  • Official transcripts from all previous academic work (MSN and BSN)
  • Documentation of an active and unencumbered North Carolina or Compact State registered nurse license
  • Copy of Nurse Practitioner Certification for Nurse practitioner applicants
  • Submit an Admission essay of 800-1000 words describing the reason for choosing the MSN program at WSSU, short and long term goals, and your understanding of the advanced nursing role (ANE or FNP).

Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Fall-January 15th

WSSU web-based application (must submit $50 application fee at the time of submission online)

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00
  • Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores - General Test
  • Minimum of 40 hours volunteer or work experience in the field of occupational therapy

Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) Application Requirements:
Application Deadline: April 1, 2014
All materials must be received by the application deadline.

  • Master's Degree in Nursing: A master's degree with a major in advanced practice nursing from a degree program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission OR
  • Meet MSN Graduation Requirements: Applicants who apply while in the last year of their graduate program must demonstrate they meet graduation requirements.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate, must be sent directly to the WSSU Admissions Office in a sealed institutional envelope. WSSU students and graduates will need to submit official WSSU transcripts.
  • GPA: Applicants must demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or greater (4.0-point scale) on MSN courses completed.
  • GRE or MAT Scores: Competitive scores on the Graduate Record Examination (general test only) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) within the past 5 years. If you are sending your GRE test scores the WSSU school code is 5909. If you are sending your MAT test scores the WSSU school code is 2661.
  • Nursing License: An active and unencumbered North Carolina RN license and APRN license (or ability to obtain licensure).
  • Curriculum Vita: Submit a curriculum vita or resume reflecting education, professional work experiences, awards, honors and other achievements.
  • DNP Essay: Submit an essay of approximately 1000 words describing Capstone Project Idea.
  • Prerequisite: A 3-credit hour statistics and graduate level research course taken within 5 years from an accredited college/university before matriculation into the DNP program.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: A letter is required from a doctoral-prepared academician, a supervisor in an employment setting, and a practicing RN or APN familiar with the applicant's intellectual ability, academic achievement, and professional commitment.
  • Criminal Background Check and 12 Panel Drug Screen: A state/federal criminal background check and 12 panel drug screen are required for all applicants. Once admitted, some clinical agencies require annual background checks or affidavits. An annual drug screen may also be required. Costs for these requirements are the responsibility of the applicant/student.
  • Interview: An interview is required by the DNP Admission Committee.
  • Optional- Scholarship Application: DNP students are encouraged to apply for scholarships/traineeships. Students applying for scholarships are required to file a FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid) Form with the WSSU Office of Financial Aid.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Application Requirements:
Deadline: Spring-January 15th

(All applicants will need to apply for admission into the Physical Therapy program through the PTCAS system. For more information visit www.ptcas.org.)

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Official report of Graduate Record Exam scores - Verbal and Quantitative
  • Complete a minimum of 50 total observation hours in two physical therapy settings
  • Demonstrate computer literacy, including the ability to use word processing, databases, and the internet
  • Complete a biographical sketch
  • Complete prerequisite courses equivalent to the following:

WSSU Bridge to Duke PhD
WSSU - Duke Nursing Bridge to the Doctorate Application Requirements:
Deadline for Cohort 2014: March 1, 2014

  • This program is designed to increase the number of nurse scientist in biomedical and behavioral research.
  • Bridge scholars are members of racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research: American Indians or Alaska Natives, Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited NLN or CCNE program.
  • GRE scores. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test within the last five years prior to application. If the GRE was taken after August 2011, a total score of 300 or more on the combined verbal and quantitative sections is required. If the GRE was taken prior to August 2011, a total score of 1000 or more on the combined verbal and quantitative sections is required.
  • Undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 (based on a 4.0 scale) and a grade of B or higher in all nursing coursework.
  • Evidence of unrestricted licensure as a registered nurse in North Carolina or Compact state.
  • One year of professional nursing experience is preferred

How to Use the Winston-Salem State University Graduate Online Application

To complete the online application, simply type your answers in the corresponding fields or select your answers from the popup lists (where applicable).

After you complete a screen, click the NEXT button at the bottom or on one of the sections listed on the left column to move to a different screen. Before you are allowed to jump screens, we will inspect your data on the current screen for errors or inconsistencies. If errors or omissions are found, you will be returned to the screen to correct your answer(s). Otherwise, your data will be saved and you will proceed to the requested screen. We also allow you to skip to another screen without your new data being saved. Be aware that if you use the Skip & Jump function on the left column, data on the current screen will not be saved and will have to be re-entered prior to submittal.
