Determine Your Student Type

Student Type

Distance You are a Distance student if you are taking courses at a location other than on the campus of UNC Asheville. These courses include online courses, teleconference courses, and face to face courses at an off-campus location. Lateral Entry teachers taking our online/teleconference courses are this type of student.

Exchange You are an Exchange student if you are an International Exchange student.

International Exchange students are defined as those students who have already been accepted to UNC Asheville through the Study Abroad office and are exchanging on programs such as ISEP, UNCEP, or direct partner institutions (ie: Chester England, Sussex England, Angers France, Hong Kong, Saitama Japan, Chuo Japan, Hannam S. Korea, Bilgi Istanbul Turkey).

Non-Degree If you are interested in taking classes for reasons other than pursuing an undergraduate degree (professional development, continuing education requirements, graduate school pre-requisites, etc), you should apply as a Non-degree student.

Visiting If you are pursuing a degree at another institution and are interested in taking classes at UNC Asheville to supplement that degree, you should apply as a Visiting student.

Distance Education

When you apply as a distance education student, you are applying to take a specific course or courses during one semester. If you are unsure what course(s) you are interested in taking, refer to the current list of available courses. You will indicate which course(s) you plan to take as part of your application.

Distance Education courses run on the UNC Asheville Academic Calendar either as semester or term courses. The application deadline is two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester or term.

If you are a lateral entry applicant, you also need to provide your RALC plan of study. Your application is not considered complete and will not be processed until this plan is received. Your application needs to be complete, including your RALC plan of study, by the application deadline.

DO NOT USE THIS APPLICATION TO APPLY TO STUDY ABROAD. All application fees are waived for International Exchange students.

Please seek study abroad clarification if you are unsure as to the appropriate application to complete, studyabroad@unca.edu.

No transcripts from your school are required, and no standardized SAT or ACT test scores are required. We have already received the required documents through your exchange program.

  • Completion of this application does not constitute regular admission to UNC Asheville.
  • Students who complete 24 hours in the non-degree status will be required to submit a degree-seeking application for admission to the university.
  • Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid or veterans benefits, nor will they be assigned an academic advisor.

Non-degree students may take up to nine credit hours each semester. Students who have been denied admission for reasons of academic deficiency, or previously enrolled students who have been dismissed, may not then be enrolled as non-degree students.

Application Deadlines are as follows:
Fall Semester - July 1 Spring Semester - November 1 Summer School - May 1

Students from other colleges or universities may attend UNC Asheville as visitors, provided they are in good academic standing (2.0 on all previous credits) at the institution they have been attending. A visiting student acquires a signed statement from the appropriate official of his or her institution specifically listing and approving the courses to be taken. This Visitor Permission Form must be received before we can process your application. As a visiting student you must submit a visiting student application for each subsequent semester that you wish to attend UNC Asheville.

Verification that credit will transfer to the sponsoring institution is the responsibility of the student. Visiting enrollment does not constitute regular admission to the UNC Asheville. Upon completion of classes the student must file a transcript request to have records forwarded to the sponsoring institution.
